Grace and Peace to you!
J.R.R. Tolkien once wrote that “not all who wander are lost.” If you are one of those wandering people, I encourage you to come and worship with us at First Church!
I am writing these words only three days after being ordained into the Office of Ministry in the United Church of Christ. You might ask why an immigration lawyer would choose to quit law and go into the ministry at a time when the mainline Protestant churches seem to be declining beyond any hope of redemption? The answer is very simple: it is God. The God revealed to us in Jesus Christ.
We live in times when we are inundated with news --- Facebook, twitter, CNN, Fox News, etc. – and, more specifically, with bad news. The media would have us either despair as to the state of our world or entertain us to death. Yet the one good news that hardly ever makes the headlines is the Good News of the Gospel: there is a God. This God is a God who cares for each one of us, so much that He came down from heaven and lived, died, and rose again for us. This God will come again in glory to make all things well and anew!
Here at First Church in Marlborough we are a community of people with their own struggles, problems, doubts – but also a community that seeks to witness to their Christian faith by our ordinary lives as well as by common work of love (the Sunday liturgy), the celebration of the sacraments, and acts of kindness and compassion (our social outreach). And so with countless generations before us, those around the world with us, and those who are yet to come, we sing boldly across the clamor of our world: “Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again!”
No matter who you are, or where you are on life’s journey – you are most welcome here!
